My journey in this industry started when I was in college. I attended Rutgers University majoring in Graphic Design. I obtained a BFA which was a more intensive study for my major. Coming out of college it was very difficult for me to find a job in my field. I ran into this problem for quite some time and worked many different jobs not in my field. I decided to take another approach and learn more about website design.
I knew the basics and took some classes in school, but I never moved forward with it. I watch numerous how to videos and started designing dummy websites to get hands on training. I developed a strong knowledge for websites using WordPress but many companies wanted knowledge with coding & programming. I started to research and learn coding on my own and gained knowledge doing that. I set out trying to find a new job and saw an ad on craigslist for a customer service associate for a website design and digital marketing company. I though that this was perfect for me to get my foot in the door. That’s when it happened.
As said above, I went in for a customer service position. I was asked if I had any other skills other then customer service and I told them that I had experience designing websites with WordPress & extensive knowledge designing graphics. It so happened that they were looking to hire someone that can help the web designer edit the websites they built and talk to customers. It was perfect! I ended up getting hired for the position and finally landing a hands-on job working with websites and online marketing. I didn’t know anything about digital marketing, but I didn’t have to worry about that aspect at this job. I started researching about SEO which is a portion of digital marketing and messing around with it on my dummy sites. Then as time passed my skill with SEO really improved and I was ready to take on that role. We were outsourcing the SEO work, so I worked something out with my boss, and he gave me the job. I was able to look at the work that was done for these clients and found out that nothing was getting done that they were paying for.
After learning about the lack of work being put into these client’s accounts, I was furious. I’ve been working for this company for a while now and I was the main point of contact for all website & SEO related inquiries. I couldn’t believe it, we’ve been feeding these clients lies the whole time. They were small businesses, mom and pop shops who knew nothing about digital marketing. They just knew they needed it. I spoke with my boss and told him that nothing was getting done for these clients. He knew exactly what was getting done and that’s when I knew I had to move on.
I couldn’t just pick up and leave because I was living paycheck to paycheck. It was hard enough for me to pay my bills, so I needed to find another source of income before I left. I ended up taking on the role as the SEO strategist but there was only so much that I could do. The time it took to really give these clients what they were paying for was much more time then I could possibly handle. I was taking work home with me just to do as much as I could. We had over 300 clients and only me doing the SEO work. I tried looking for another job but all the jobs I were offered was for companies that were doing the same thing my current place of employment was doing, taking their money. I had enough so I decided to start my own business. I didn’t have enough clients so I couldn’t quit my job because I wouldn’t be able to make it financially and pay my bills.
It was June 1, 2017 when I registered and started my business. It was then on January 1, 2019 that I was finally able to quit my job and go into business full-time for myself. The fact that it was a new year really played a pivotal part in me quitting my job. I took the risk because I needed a change. I told myself I will work as hard as I can to make this happen. Well, it’s happening. I’m finally on my own and not living paycheck to paycheck anymore. You know why? It’s because the clients that I have know how much work I do for them. They’re getting what they’re paying for and you know how they can tell? It’s because they’re seeing more business and they know where that business is coming from. I refuse to become any of the companies that I interviewed for or that I worked for. The only thing I can honestly say I learned at my old job was what NOT TO DO.
